A ópera rock marcante do Who, Tommy, deve retornar à Broadway para uma nova temporada em 2024.
O musical vencedor do Tony Award estreou originalmente na Broadway em 1993, baseado no álbum da banda de 1969 e dirigido por Des McAnuff.
O cofundador do Who, Pete Townshend, 78, deve se reunir com Des, agora com 71 anos, para reimaginar a produção do Nederlander Theatre de Nova York - com pré-estréias começando em 8 de março antes da abertura completa em 28 de março.
“Em 1969, quando escrevi originalmente TOMMY com o The Who, ninguém jamais havia escrito canções populares sobre trauma, ninguém falava sobre bullying, o abuso sexual doméstico era um assunto virtualmente censurado”, afirmou Pete em um comunicado à imprensa.
Ele continuou: "Então, em 1993, trabalhando com Des na peça de teatro encenada, quebramos as regras estabelecidas para um espetáculo musical. Agora, a geração atual está quebrando todas essas regras novamente - e o que Des conseguiu com este novo e incrível a produção homenageia eles e sua coragem e audácia."
O músico disse que “mal pode esperar” para ver como o novo show “se conectará com o público mais jovem da Broadway”, ao mesmo tempo que prometeu que os fãs de longa data ficariam “maravilhados”.
A produção original da Broadway estreou em 22 de abril de 1993 no St James Theatre.
Após 899 shows e cinco vitórias no Tony Award, o musical foi encerrado em junho de 1995.

The Who's landmark rock opera Tommy is set to return to Broadway for a new run in 2024.
The Tony Award-winning musical originally opened on Broadway in 1993, based on the band's 1969 album and directed by Des McAnuff.
The Who's co-founder Pete Townshend, 78, is set to reunite with Des, now-71, to reimagine the production for New York's Nederlander Theatre - with previews starting on 8 March before a full opening on 28 March.
"In 1969, when I originally wrote TOMMY with The Who, nobody had ever written popular music songs about trauma, nobody talked about bullying, domestic sexual abuse was a subject that was virtually censored," Pete stated in a press release.
He continued, "Then, in 1993, working with Des on the staged theatre piece, we broke the established rules for a musical show. Now, the current generation is breaking all of those rules again - and what Des has achieved with this incredible new production honours them and their courage and audacity."
The musician said he "can't wait" to see how the new show "connects with younger Broadway audiences" while also promising that long-time fans would be "blown away".
The original Broadway production opened on 22 April, 1993 at the St James Theatre.
Following 899 shows and five Tony Award wins, the musical closed in June 1995.
